Redoing your kitchen yourself at a fair price can be tough. Where to start? What should you do, and how do you ensure you don’t break the bank while giving your kitchen new life? Small upgrades, such as new panels and fillers, splashbacks, countertops, or even new handles, can bring a breath of fresh air into your space. Whether you want to maximise space in a small kitchen or create an entirely new look, DIYCupboards.com is here to help!

We’ve put together a guide on how you can redo your kitchen yourself at a fair price without draining your savings. We’ll discuss why a DIY kitchen might just be the option for you, as well as how you can still create a custom kitchen on a budget with the help of our DIY designer.

There are two main styles of kitchens we see a lot: the classic white kitchen and the custom, eccentric kitchen.

How to DIY a Classic White Kitchen

With the rise of the Scandinavian interior design movement and an increased emphasis on clean, calming spaces since COVID-19, more homeowners have opted to return to the classic white kitchen look. That is, white cupboards and simple decor whilst still maintaining an inviting and homely atmosphere.

You can create a new kitchen entirely by yourself at a fair price with our flatpack kitchen cupboards. This means you put them together yourself. Don’t worry, they’re completely beginner-friendly: we believe in making DIY accessible for everyone. For smaller kitchens (like an office kitchen or granny flat kitchen), we recommend the kitchenette line. If you’re working with standard-size or larger kitchens, try the Express kitchen line.

Let’s discuss how to create a brand-new look with our flatpack kitchen cupboards.

Decide on Placement

Before starting to shop flatpack kitchen cupboards, you should understand the space you’re working with. Do you have corners? Are there any small spaces you could take advantage of?

We offer corner kitchen floor cupboards and a 300mm kitchen floor unit to fix both of these problems. The ideal classic white kitchen has a fitted look with clean, sleek lines, so using all available space and not leaving gaps is paramount to achieving its desired look and feel.

Floor Units

To begin, you’ll need a couple of floor units. For standard-size kitchens, use the 900mm kitchen floor unit. If you want a bigger cupboard, we also have a 1200mm kitchen floor unit. Both have two doors and apt shelving.

If you would like drawers in your kitchen (a must-have), our 450mm kitchen floor unit with four drawers is a great choice. Otherwise, we offer a unit with one drawer, the 450mm kitchen floor unit with one drawer. Any solid kitchen has a grocery cupboard, so don’t forget to add our 450mm kitchen grocery unit to your basket. To complete the fitted look, opt for the 600mm under-counter oven unit.

Wall Units

To best take advantage of vertical space, use wall units. After all, we want as much storage space as possible. Try our wide 900mm kitchen wall unit. If you’d like an equally great unit, we also have a 600mm kitchen wall unit, which only has one door. We offer even smaller versions of the one-door unit, one that measures in at 450mm, and one that’s 300mm – great for those tight spaces.

Pair your corner floor unit with our 600mm corner kitchen wall unit to make sure the look flows nicely. Now, it’s time to show off! Get the star of your kitchen – the microwave – its very own home: the 600mm kitchen microwave unit. To display your best crockery, go for our 300mm wall-end display unit.

Panels, Fillers, and Handles

Our floor units all have plastic legs, which you’ll need to cover up with fillers to prevent scuff marks. We also recommend that you get panels to cover the ends of your cupboards. Lastly, don’t forget to obtain handles for your cupboard. We have a wide range of accessories to choose from.

How to Add Character to Your Kitchen

Now that the bones of your kitchen are laid, it’s time to add some colour! Here are a few tips, including adding a feature splashback and decorative items you might consider.

Splashbacks

DIYCupboards.com offers custom SABS-approved glass splashbacks. You can request a custom print for a feature wall or pair a sage or white splashback with your classic white kitchen. Any soft colour would work well with a classic white kitchen.

Decorative Items

Some decorative items you could add to your kitchen might be:

  • A kitchen rug
  • Potted plants, like herbs or succulents
  • Open shelves
  • Fridge magnets
