29 May Kitchen Wall Units That Maximise Vertical Space
In most South African kitchens, the most consistently wasted space is not on the floor, it is on the walls. The stretch of wall between the top of your upper cupboards and the ceiling is often left bare, collecting dust and doing nothing for your storage.
With the right wall units and a bit of intentional planning, that space can become one of the hardest-working parts of your kitchen.
Why Vertical Space Matters
Floor space in a kitchen is finite and shared between appliances, a dining area, and the people using the room. Wall space, by contrast, is largely available from the moment you walk in. Every extra centimetre of height you use for storage is a centimetre of countertop or floor space you reclaim for something else.
This is especially true in smaller kitchens. As we cover in our storage ideas for small kitchens, walls are often underused even when counter and floor space is already at a premium. Taller wall units, or adding top-box units above your existing ones, can make a significant difference without touching the floor plan at all.

Choosing the Right Wall Unit Height
Our kitchen wall cupboards are available in three standard heights: 720mm, 900mm, and 1080mm. The right choice depends on your ceiling height, how high your wall units will be mounted, and how much reach you are comfortable with.
A 720mm unit is a practical everyday choice: easy to reach into, good for frequently used items. A 900mm unit gives you meaningfully more storage in the same wall footprint. A 1080mm unit, when mounted at the right height, can bring your wall cupboards close to the ceiling, eliminating the gap entirely and giving the kitchen a clean, built-in appearance.
If your ceiling height does not allow a single tall unit to close the gap, a top-box unit mounted above your standard wall units is an effective solution. These shallower upper units are ideal for items you reach for less often — seasonal baking equipment, serving platters, extra stock, and they tidy up the look of the kitchen considerably.
Planning Your Wall Unit Layout
Before ordering, take careful measurements of your wall space, noting the position of windows, extractor fans, and any fixed points that will interrupt a run of cupboards. Our measuring tips guide walks through everything you need to record before planning a layout, including how to account for door swing clearance and the gap above your countertop.
Wall units are also designed to work as a cohesive set alongside our floor-standing kitchen cupboards. Matching your wall and floor units in finish and style gives the kitchen a unified, fitted appearance, which is one of the most effective ways to make any kitchen look more considered and complete.
Going Higher: The Top-to-Ceiling Look
One of the most impactful things you can do in a kitchen renovation is take your wall units all the way to the ceiling. It removes the awkward gap where grease and dust gather, adds a substantial amount of storage, and makes the kitchen feel intentional and well-designed.
Our guide on maximising space with clever cupboard layouts goes into more detail on planning upwards rather than outwards, a principle that applies just as well to kitchens as it does to bedrooms.
If you are using the 1080mm wall units and your ceiling is higher than the unit allows for, a filler panel above the cupboard doors gives a neat, finished edge. Your DIY Designer consultant can help you plan this detail when you visit the showroom.
